Oldham, primo Comune del Regno Unito a firmare il “Pledge to Peace”

OLDHAM, PRIMO COMUNE DEL REGNO UNITO CHE FIRMA  IL “PLEDGE TO PEACE”

L’impegno del Comune di Oldham nella costruzione della comunità e nella diffusione della pace lo ha visto diventare la prima Amministrazione Locale nel Regno Unito che ha firmato una Dichiarazione Europea.

Il sindaco di Oldham, Councillor Ateeque Ur-Rehman, rappresentanti del Consiglio Comunale e volontari di  “Peace Talks Oldham” hanno firmato il “Pledge to Peace” – una  dichiarazione di intenti che vedrà la città di Oldham impegnata in progetti e azioni volti a promuovere una cultura di pace.

Al Primo cittadino di Oldham è stato donato lo stemma di Mazara Del Vallo, una città siciliana, che ha recentemente tenuto un festival internazionale per celebrare la pace e la cultura.

La Dichiarazione del Pledge to Peace si integra nell’impegno di Oldham verso i valori della cooperazione, come la correttezza, l’equità, il rispetto e il lavorare insieme.

Il Sindaco Ur-Rehman, ha dichiarato: “Questa firma rafforza il lavoro positivo di Oldham per promuovere la pace in tutto il distretto, come la risposta alla crisi di Gaza. Il Consiglio ha issato  la Bandiera di Pace di Oldham e nella stessa settimana una delegazione di Oldham ha consegnato una petizione con 8303 firme a Downing Street, per chiedere la fine di tutte le ostilità.

“Il Consiglio Comunale ha lavorato con  Peace Talks Oldham e altri partner anche per altri eventi, come  la prima Giornata della Pace di Oldhman lo scorso settembre – e una conferenza di pace lo scorso ottobre per individuare modi pratici attraverso cui i cittadini possono aiutare coloro che soffrono a causa dei conflitti.

“E’ già in programma un secondo evento Giornata della Pace di Oldham per celebrare la Giornata Internazionale della Pace nel mese di settembre.

“Questi sono tutti gli eventi condivisi dalle comunità di Oldham, di qualsiasi etnia o fede – che vogliono la pace.

“E’ fantastico avere un collegamento con Mazara Del Vallo, che è una città esemplare nel promuovere la pace in Europa, e questo ci permetterà di imparare come poter aiutare a promuovere la pace nelle nostre comunità e oltre.”

I rappresentanti di Peace Talks Oldham, Richard Outram e Maria Ellis, hanno partecipato al festival e consegnato una lettera di amicizia e un dono da parte del sindaco di Oldham al sindaco della città. Hanno anche incontrato l’ Ambasciatore per il Pledge to Peace, Prem Rawat.

La Dichiarazione di Bruxelles ‘Pledge to Peace’ è una iniziativa europea che mira a creare una rete di persone con una visione condivisa del valore della pace, che hanno il potenziale per creare, promuovere e comunicare progetti e iniziative concrete in grado di promuovere la pace all’interno delle loro comunità.

COUNCIL FIRST IN THE UK TO SIGN “PLEDGE TO PEACE”

Oldham Council’s commitment to building communities and spreading peace has seen it become the first local authority in the UK to sign a European declaration.

The Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ateeque Ur-Rehman, council representatives and volunteers from Peace Talks Oldham have signed the “Pledge to Peace” – a commitment of intent that will see Oldham put in place projects and actions promoting a culture of peace.

Oldham’s first citizen was presented with a coat of arms from Mazara Del Vallo, a Sicilian city which recently held an international festival to celebrate peace and culture.

The Pledge to Peace declaration complements Oldham’s commitment to its co-operative values, in particular fairness, respect and working together.

Councillor Ur-Rehman said: “This signing reinforces Oldham’s positive work to promote peace throughout the borough, like the response to the crisis in Gaza. The council raised an Oldham Peace Flag and in the same week members of an Oldham delegation delivered an 8,303 name petition to Downing Street, calling for an end to all hostilities.

 “Other events have seen the council working with Peace Talks Oldham and partners to host the first Oldham Peace Day event last September – and a peace conference last October to identify practical ways residents can help those suffering through conflict.

“Plans are already in place to hold a second Oldham Peace Day event to celebrate International Peace Day in September.

“These are all events shared by communities across Oldham, irrespective of ethnicity or faith – and who ultimately want peace.

 “It is great to have links with Mazara Del Vallo, which is a city exemplary at promoting peace in Europe, and this will enable us to learn how we can help promote peace within our communities and beyond.”

Representatives from Peace Talks Oldham, Richard Outram and Maria Dawn Ellis, attended the festival and delivered a letter of friendship and a gift from the Mayor of Oldham to the city’s Mayor. They also met with the Ambassador to the Pledge to Peace, Prem Rawat.

The Bruxelles Declaration: Pledge to Peace is a European initiative which aims to create a network of people with a “shared vision of the value of peace, who have the potential to create, promote and communicate tangible projects and initiatives” that can promote peace within their communities.
